# Projects

Case studies for your Work page.

**Add-on**
Projects is an add-on, so not every website has it. If it is not in
your menu, see [Add-ons](https://docs.lookoutridgeit.com/billing/add-ons/) to add it.

A project is one job, written up. What the customer needed, what you did, how
it turned out. One entry is one project.

Every project you publish gets a page of its own. They all show on your Work
page.

Go to **Content**, then **Website**, then **Projects**.

## What goes in a project

Click **Add New** to start one. Only the title is required. Leave a box empty
and your website leaves that bit out.

| Box | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| **Project title** | The name of the job, such as "Deck Rebuild in Maple Falls". |
| **Cover image** | The photo of the job. It shows on the card and on the project's page. |
| **Client** | Who the job was for. A first name and a last initial is plenty. |
| **Year** | The year you did it, such as `2025`. |
| **Short summary** | One or two lines. It shows on the card and under the title. |
| **Case study** | The long version. Type plain text, or add blocks the way you do on a page. |
| **Author** | The person on your team who wrote it up. See below. |
| **Gallery album slug** | Adds a photo album under the case study. |
| **Featured** | A switch. It only matters for a block set to featured work. |
| **Sort order** | A number. It sets the order your projects appear in. |
| **Search & social** | How the project looks in Google and when it is shared. |

**Case study** takes the same blocks a page takes, plus photos, videos and
more. [Pages](https://docs.lookoutridgeit.com/content/pages/) shows how. [What Google
shows](https://docs.lookoutridgeit.com/content/pages/#what-google-shows) covers **Search & social** and the
**SEO** boxes.

Categories and tags are not in the form. They sit in the **Settings** panel on
the right. See [Categories and tags](https://docs.lookoutridgeit.com/content/projects/#categories-and-tags) below.

## Adding a project

1. Click **Add New**.
2. Fill in **Project title**.
3. Add a **Cover image**, the **Client**, the **Year** and a **Short summary**.
4. Write the job up in **Case study**.
5. Click **Save** as you go. **Save** stores your work. No visitor sees it.
6. When it is ready, click **Publish now**, then **Publish now** again to confirm.

**Publish now** puts the project on your website that second. [Saving and
publishing](https://docs.lookoutridgeit.com/start-here/saving-and-publishing/) covers both buttons.

**Important**
Ask the customer before you name them or show their home. A first name, a last
initial and the town is enough for most jobs.

## The author

**Author** credits one person on your team with the write-up. Click the box and
pick a name from your [Team](https://docs.lookoutridgeit.com/plugins/team/). Leave it on **- No author -** and
no name shows.

It works the same way as on a blog post. [Posts](https://docs.lookoutridgeit.com/content/posts/#the-author)
shows what visitors see.

## Categories and tags

Categories and tags sort your work into groups, such as "Kitchens" or "Decks".
A visitor can click one and see every project in it.

1. Save the project at least once. The box only shows on a saved project.
2. Open the **Settings** panel on the right.
3. Find **Categories** or **Tags**, under **Taxonomies**.
4. Click the box and pick one from the list. To make a new one, type its name
and click the **Create** line under it.

**Warning**
A category or tag saves the moment you pick it. It does not wait for **Publish
changes**. On a project that is already live, visitors see the change right
away.

To take one off, click the small cross on it.

Your projects and your blog posts share one list of categories and one list of
tags. Every category and tag gets a page of its own for your work. See
[Categories](https://docs.lookoutridgeit.com/manage/categories/) and [Tags](https://docs.lookoutridgeit.com/manage/tags/).

Use the same few on every project. That is what makes them useful.

## Adding a photo album

A case study can end with a set of photos. That set is an album, and it comes
from your [Gallery](https://docs.lookoutridgeit.com/content/gallery/).

1. Go to **Content**, then **Website**, then **Gallery**, and open the album
   you want.
2. Copy its slug. The slug is in the **Settings** panel on the right.
3. Come back to the project and paste it into **Gallery album slug**.
4. Save and publish.

The album's photos then show under the case study, on the project's own page.
Leave the box empty and nothing extra shows.

Type a slug that does not match an album and no photos show. Nothing breaks,
and your website gives you no warning. Check the page after you save.

## Featured and Sort order

**Sort order** sets the order. The lowest number goes first, and an empty box
counts as zero. Two projects with the same number fall back to A to Z by title.

Give every project a number, or none of them. Numbering only some is what makes
this confusing.

**Featured** is a switch. On its own it changes nothing, and your Work page
shows every project either way. It only matters for a Projects block set to
show featured work, which is covered below.

## What people see

**Your Work page.** Across the top sits a row of chips: **All**, then one for
each category and tag your projects use. Each chip opens that category's or
that tag's own page. Then comes a grid of cards. Each card shows the cover
image, the title, the client and year, the summary and its categories and tags.

With nothing published yet, the page reads "No projects published yet."

**A project's own page.** The client and the year sit above the title, then
the summary, the cover image and your case study. The album follows, if you
set one.

Down the side sits a strip with the client, the year, the categories and the
tags. Under those come the side panels, which you choose on the [Article
Sidebar](https://docs.lookoutridgeit.com/plugins/article-sidebar/) page. Out of the box that is **On this
page**, a list of your headings, and **Written by**.

At the foot come the **About the author** box, any comments, and **More work**,
which offers two other projects.

## Comments

Visitors can leave a comment under a project. Comments are off until an Admin
turns them on for projects. See [Content
Types](https://docs.lookoutridgeit.com/admin/content-types/#turning-on-comments). New comments wait for you
under **Comments**. See [Comments](https://docs.lookoutridgeit.com/manage/comments/).

## The Projects block

A block puts a grid of your work on any page, such as your homepage. Open the
page under **Content**, then **Pages**, and add the **Projects** block. It sits
under **Sections**.

| Setting | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| **Headline** | A heading above the grid. |
| **Subheadline** | A line under that heading. |
| **Which projects** | **All projects**, or **Featured only**. |
| **Maximum projects to show** | A number, such as 6. |
| **Columns** | **2 (large)**, **3**, or **4** cards across. |

**Featured only** is where the **Featured** switch does its work. The block
then shows just the projects with that switch turned on.

The block shows nothing until you have published a project.

## Putting Work in your menu

Nothing links to your Work page out of the box. Add the link yourself.

1. Go to **Plugins**, then **Site Layout**, then **Navigation**.
2. Pick **Primary Navigation** in the menu box at the top.
3. Click **Add item**.
4. Type `Work` as the **Label** and `/work` as the **URL**.
5. Click **Save**.

The link is live as soon as you save. [Menus](https://docs.lookoutridgeit.com/manage/menus/) covers that
screen.

## The Work page itself

The grid is built for you. The page around it is yours.

Go to **Content**, then **Pages**, and open the entry named **Work**. Blocks
you add there show above the grid. The page's **SEO** boxes are there too.
[Pages](https://docs.lookoutridgeit.com/content/pages/) covers both.

## Before you launch

Your website came with one project, to show you the shape of one. Its title
starts with **EXAMPLE**. It uses the same example category and tags as the
example blog post.

**Warning**
Do not launch with that project live. It is on your Work page, and it tells the
reader to replace it.

Open it and write your own job over it, or click **Move to Trash** to take it
off your website.

Then delete the example category and tags. See [Categories](https://docs.lookoutridgeit.com/manage/categories/)
and [Tags](https://docs.lookoutridgeit.com/manage/tags/).

[Replace the examples](https://docs.lookoutridgeit.com/setup/replace-the-examples/) covers the rest of the
sample content.
