# Social Links

Social Links is the list of profiles you want people to follow. It is one of
the [one-of-a-kind entries](/start-here/admin-panel/). There is exactly one, it
is already there, and you open it and edit it.

Go to **Content**, then **Social Links**. One row is waiting. Click its title.

:::caution[Warning]
Leave **Add New** alone on this screen. It makes a second entry, and your
website then has to guess which one is real. The [tour of the admin
panel](/start-here/admin-panel/) explains why.
:::

:::note[Important]
There is a second screen called **Social Links** in the panel, under **Admin**,
then **Settings**. It does nothing on your website. Fill it in and no icon
appears anywhere.

Your profiles go here, under **Content**. If you have already typed them into
that other screen, type them again here.
:::

## Where the links show up

**In the footer of every page.** They sit in a small box near the bottom of
your website, under the words you put in **Heading**.

*The middle box is this entry. The icons come from the platform you pick.*

**In a Social Links block.** The same profiles can also show partway down a
page, bigger. It is the same one list, so you only ever type a profile once.
[Pages](/content/pages/) shows how a block is added.

## The two boxes at the top

**Title** is a label for the panel only. Visitors never see it. Leave it as it
is.

**Heading** is the words above the icons, such as "Follow us".

## Adding a profile

![The Profiles list open, with three numbered marks: 1 on Add Item, 2 on the Platform box, 3 on the Handle or full URL box.](../../../assets/screenshots/social-links-edit.png)

*One row is one profile.*

**1. Add Item.** Adds an empty row at the bottom of the list.

**2. Platform.** Click the box and pick one: **Facebook**, **Instagram**,
**Google Business Profile**, **Yelp**, **Nextdoor**, **YouTube**, **TikTok**,
**LinkedIn**, **X (Twitter)**, **Pinterest**, **Threads**, **WhatsApp** or
**GitHub**. Your choice sets the icon. There is nothing to pick or upload.

**3. Handle or full URL.** Where the icon sends people.

**Link label** is the last box in the row. It prints words next to the icon,
such as "Read our reviews". Leave it empty and the icon stands on its own,
which is what most sites want.

The six dots on the left of a row move it up or down. The red trash icon on the right
takes it out.

:::tip[Tip]
Open the profile in your browser, click the address bar, and copy the whole
address. Paste that into **Handle or full URL**. It works for every platform,
and it never guesses wrong.
:::

## When an icon does not show up

:::note[Important]
A row that cannot make a working link is dropped, and nothing tells you. The
icon simply never turns up in the footer.

The usual cause is a short handle where the whole web address was needed.
**Google Business Profile** always needs the whole address. On the other
platforms a short handle usually works, and the whole address always does.
:::

Publish, then look at the footer of your live website and count the icons. If
one is missing, open that row and paste the whole address in.

## Changing or removing a profile

To change one, open the entry, type over what is in the boxes, and click
**Publish**.

:::caution[Warning]
Removing a row takes that icon off every page of your website as soon as you
publish.
:::

To remove one, click the red trash icon on the right of its row, then click
**Publish**.

## Publishing a change

Nothing you type here reaches your website until you click **Publish**. Until
then the old icons stay up. See [Saving and
publishing](/start-here/saving-and-publishing/).
