Step 6: Navigation

Check every link in your header and footer, and fix the ones that go nowhere.

One quick job: the links people use to get around your website. Every one of them should open a real page of yours.

You edit them on the Navigation page. Go to Plugins, then Navigation. It sits in the Site Layout group. Menus explains that page in full. This step is the short version.

Important

Nothing you change on the Navigation page reaches your website until you click Save. Then it is live at once. There is no Publish step.

Until you save, the bottom of the page says Unsaved changes.

The checklist

Open your live site and click each link across the top, then each one in the footer. You are looking for a link that lands on a “page not found” screen.

The links across the top start as About, Services, Service Areas, Gallery, Team and Contact. They live in the menu called Primary Navigation.

The footer shows some of the footer menus: Footer: Services, Footer: Company and Footer: Support. Which ones depends on your site’s style. All of their links point at real pages.

Older websites are the exception. There, the Company menu came with links named Blog and Careers, and those pages do not exist. If you see them, take them out.

Warning

The Delete menu button at the top deletes the whole menu and every link in it. Delete Primary Navigation and the top of your website has no links left.

The panel asks you first. Click Cancel. To take out one link, use the Remove button on its own row instead.

  1. Open the Menu box at the top and pick the menu that holds the dead link.
  2. Click Remove on that link’s row.
  3. Click Save.

Do the same for any other dead link you found.

Top of the list is the leftmost link on your website. Put the things people came for first, such as Services and Contact.

Drag a row by the grip at its left end, or use the up and down arrows on the row. Then click Save.

Skip this unless your site has a food menu.

Your menu page sits at /menu, and nothing links to it out of the box.

  1. Pick Primary Navigation in the Menu box.
  2. Click Add item. A new row opens, ready to fill in.
  3. Type Menu in Label.
  4. Under Link, leave Custom URL picked, and type /menu in the box.
  5. Click Save.

To put a link inside a drop-down, click Nest on its row. It moves under the link above it. The drop-down part of Menus shows how to set one up well.

5. Link to any page you added

A page you add yourself is not in any menu. Add it the same way, with one change: under Link, pick Page or entry, then find your page and click it.

A link made this way follows the page, even if its address changes later. See Adding a new page.

Open your live website and click every link in the header and the footer. Every one opens a real page of yours. None of them opens a “page not found” screen.
